The wise man built his house upon a rock and the foolish man built his house upon the sand. Jesus told this story in the sermon on the mount to explain that his listeners were like one of these two people.

Matthew 7:24-27, Luke 6:46-49 “The wise man built his house upon a rock. The foolish man built his house upon the sand. The story of the Wise and Foolish builders was told by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus said that everyone who listened to him was like a wise man who built his house upon a rock and when the winds blew and rain came that the house stood firm but whoever did not listen to Jesus was like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand. When the rains came and the winds blew then the house fell down because it was set on sand."
